Richard Schaeffer is the founder and executive chairman of Liquid Holdings Group, a provider of trade execution and back-office systems for active and institutional asset managers. Schaeffer is the former chairman of NYMEX Holdings, Inc., and of the New York Mercantile Exchange, Inc.  He served as the chairman of the board of the NYMEX Charitable Foundation prior to NYMEX being sold the CME Group.
As NYMEX chairman, Schaeffer oversaw the exchange’s shift to electronic trading, as well as its listing and IPO on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), and its eventual sale in 2008 to the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME). Schaeffer left NYMEX after the sale. In 2009, he became the new owner of the Harbour restaurant in New York City. 
He was a NYMEX member and seat-owner starting in 1981 and was a member of NYMEX's board of directors from March 1990 to 2007. Schaeffer served as treasurer of the exchange from 1993 to 2004 and vice chairman from 2004 to 2006, and was an executive committee member since 1992.
Previously, Schaeffer was an executive director of Global Energy Futures for ABN Amro, and a conferring member on behalf of the company and its predecessor, Chicago Corp., since 1987 on all of the New York futures exchanges.
Politically in 2007, Schaeffer donated to Moran for Congress, John McCain 2008 Inc., Chris Dodd for President Inc, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and Rudy Giuliani Presidential Committee Inc.
Schaeffer is a 1974 graduate of the University of Maryland, majoring in accounting. In December 2006, he delivered the commencement keynote address at the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland.
